What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin covers that go over the front of your teeth to give them a more traditional appearance. Once in place, veneers will look like a natural tooth. Dentists use veneers to correct a variety of dental issues, including crooked or misshapen teeth, chipped or worn teeth, large gaps or uneven spaces between teeth, and stained teeth that can’t be whitened.

The Different Types of Veneers your South Vancouver Cosmetic Dentist Offers

Veneers are made using two different types of materials: porcelain and composite resin. Each material has its own benefits, so it’s important to discuss your options with your dentist so you can decide which one is right for you.

Porcelain Veneers

A porcelain veneer is a thin shell that’s custom-designed to fit over your natural tooth. Since porcelain veneers are made from porcelain, they’re strong, they don’t easily stain, and they have a natural-looking surface that can blend in with the surrounding teeth. Additionally, your dentist won’t have to remove as much tooth enamel with a porcelain veneer as he or she would with a cap or crown.

If you decide to go with a porcelain veneer, your dentist will remove a small amount of enamel from the front and sides of the tooth. This will help prepare the tooth for the veneer and make room for the veneer to fit. Next, your dentist will make a mold of the prepared tooth to help create the veneer. At this point, you and your dentist can also pick out the shade for the veneer so it matches your surrounding natural teeth.

Once the mold has been created, it’s sent to a dental lab for the custom-designed porcelain veneer. Since it could take several days for the lab to create your veneer, your dentist may give you a temporary veneer to wear.

When your porcelain veneer comes back to your dentist, you’ll return to the office to have it positioned. Your dentist will check the shape and fit of the veneer. If everything is acceptable, your teeth are cleaned and the veneer is bonded over the natural tooth.

Composite Resin Veneers

Your other option when choosing a veneer is a composite resin veneer. These veneers are made with a tooth-coloured resin filling that bonds to the tooth. Although composite veneers are typically not as strong as porcelain veneers, they’re easy to fix if they get damaged. They also tend to cost less than porcelain veneers.

Plus, since your dentist usually doesn’t have to remove as much tooth enamel when placing a composite resin veneer, it might mean fewer trips to the office to have one put in place. In fact, some composite resin veneers require just one visit to your dentist.

If you choose a composite resin veneer, your dentist will start by reshaping and preparing the tooth for the resin. He or she will then bond the resin to your tooth in a colour that best matches the surrounding teeth and shape it into a natural form. A special light will be used to harden the resin and bond it to your tooth. Finally, the veneer is polished and smoothed so it looks like a natural tooth.

What to Know Before You Get Veneers

If you’re interested in getting veneers, it’s important to keep in mind that your teeth and gums must be healthy before the veneers can go in place. Also, just like your natural teeth, veneers can chip or break. This is why you should avoid biting hard objects, such as ice. You might also need to wear a night guard while you’re sleeping if you grind your teeth.

Your South Vancouver Cosmetic Dentist’s Approach to Veneers

At Fraserview Dentist, we take a patient-centric approach to veneers. If you’re not sure if veneers are right for you, we can do a mock-up mold of your mouth so you can see what the veneers will look like before starting the process. Additionally, when the veneers do come back from the lab, we take the time to do a try-on. If you’re not happy with the fit or look, we will send the veneers back to the lab for a re-do until you’re satisfied with the results.

If your smile makes you feel self-conscious, come speak with the dentists at Fraserview Dentist about the possibility of veneers. You’ll be able to learn more about your options and have an opportunity to see what your smile can look like with veneers in place.
